چکیده

AKDAG, F., O. CADIRCI and B. SIRIKEN, 2010. Effect of estrus on milk yield and composition in Jersey cows. Bulg. J. Agric. Sci., 16: 783-787 This study was performed to demonstrate the effect of estrus on milk yield and composition in Jersey. In this study, 15 jersey cows which were at the same estrus period, in the third lactation period and breeding under uniform housing and feeding conditions were selected. Milk production was calculated by sampling milk at the evening hours in the estrus period and 3 days after the end of estrus period. Acidity, pH, density, dry matter, fat and lactose levels, were determined from the obtained milk samples in evening milking. In this study, milk yield of cows in estrus was determined as 4.8 kg while post estrus production elevated to 5.8 kg (P<0.01). Conversely, it was determined that the estrus does not significantly affect compound of the milk (P>0.05). High positive correlation between dry matter and fat content (r = 0.673) in estrus period was detected. In post estrus correlations between milk composition; negative (r = -0.755) between pH and lactose and positive (r = 0.755) phenotypic correlation between dry matter and density were determined. In conclusion, it was indicated that estrus has been important effect on milk yield while does not have a significant effect on milk composition.

Factors Affecting the Dry Period Length and Its Effect on Milk Production and Composition in Subsequent Lactation of Holstein Cows

The study aimed to determine factors affecting the dry period length and effect of dry days on milk yield, milk composition and lactation length in the next lactation of dairy cows. Data used for analysis included 7264 lactation records collected from 2012 to 2016 on 4737 Holstein cows raised in 152 herds. The statistical model used to determine the factors influencing the dry period length sho...

The Relationships Between Milk Production and Some Blood Metabolites and Their Effects on Returning to Estrus in Lactating Holstein Dairy Cows

In this study, the relationships and correlations between milk production and some blood metabolites related to energy and protein balance and their effects were investigated on returning to estrus after AI in lactating Holstein dairy cows. Blood and milk samples were collected from sixty lactating Holstein dairy cows based on their reproductive status in 13-17 d post AI. BUN, MUN, glucose, tri...

Effects of Milking Frequency on Milk Production and Composition of Holstein Cows during Their First Three Lactations

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of milking frequency (two times daily vs. three times daily) on the 305-d lactation milk, fat and protein yield and fat and protein percentage of Holstein dairy cows in Morocco. Data analyzed were 31400 records collected between 2009 and 2016 on 14272 cows raised in 194 herds. The frequency of milking had significant effects (P<...

Growth, reproduction, and lactation in somatic cell cloned cows with short telomeres.

We previously showed that telomere lengths of 10 somatic cell cloned cows were significantly shorter than normal. In this study, we investigated growth, reproduction, and lactation in these animals to determine if shortened telomeres have any effect on these characteristics. Six Holstein and 4 Jersey cloned cows, derived from oviduct cells, were reared under general group feeding. Body weights ...

Milk Production and Composition, and Intake of Holstein Lactating Cows Fed Diets with Partial Substitution of Soybean Meal with Flaked Field Pea

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of a partial substitution of soybean meal with field pea (Pisum sativum) in Holstein lactating dairy cow diets on dry matter intake, milk yield and composition, blood metabolites, rumen ammonia-N concentration and pH. Eighteen lactating Holstein cows were randomly assigned into three groups based on parity, days in milk, and mil...
